Old Pubs of Ripon - Can You Help?
We at Ripon.org have got our hands on some information regarding public houses in Ripon in 1850, and is dated July 1950. The information given is the name of the street, the name of the pub that stood there in 1850, and the name of the pub/shop/building that stood in its place in 1950.

The population in 1850 was 6160 and there were 39 'Inns' so that there was a licensed house for every 158 inhabitants.
In 1950 the estimated population was 9652 and there were 29 'Inns' so that there was a licensed house for every 333 inhabitants.
In 2008 the estimated population is 15922 and there are 19 'Inns' so that there is a licensed house for every 838 inhabitants.

Was called Highland Laddie / Black Dog. In June 1956 The Black Dog Darts Team won the Yorkshire Championships - but were defeated in the 1/4 finals of the Northern Counties by the eventual winners. In Jan 1963 The Black Dog was auctioned to Scottish breweries for £4,500 and the name changed to The Highland Laddie, then to Rowels, and then to Bojangles in 1994, soon to be changed to The Outside Inn, followed by The Dog & Duck, and then Joe Rigatoni restaurant. It is now The Terrace restaurant & bar. (Thanks also to Mark Henshaw for this info) |
